Charles Gérard Bio
Charles Gérard was a French actor and director who had a career spanning over six decades. Born on December 1, 1926, in Istanbul, Turkey, he moved to France with his family at a young age. He first gained recognition as an actor in the 1960s when he appeared in Jean-Luc Godard's films such as "Breathless" and "Pierrot le Fou." He went on to act in over 80 films, often playing supporting roles and appearing in numerous comedies. Gérard was not only an actor but also a director, screenwriter, and producer. He made his directorial debut with "Un aller simple" in 1971 and went on to direct several other films, including "Je suis timide...mais je me soigne" (1978) and "La Voiture" (1977). He was also known for his work as a screenwriter, having written the script for the comedy film "Les Bidasses en Folie" in 1971. Despite his long and successful career in the French film industry, Gérard was best known for his friendship and partnership with French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo. The two met on the set of Godard's "Breathless" and went on to act in numerous films together, including "That Man from Rio" and "Borsalino." Their partnership lasted for over five decades, and Gérard was often referred to as Belmondo's "alter ego." Gérard continued to act and direct into his 90s, with his last film credit being for the 2018 French thriller "The Return of the Hero." He was known for his warm personality and sense of humor, and his contributions to the French film industry will always be remembered. Charles Gérard passed away on September 19, 2019, at the age of 92.
