The older style was packed with so much more detail. The expression was easy to tell too. Now it's rare to get any detail in a series, they're all rushed.

Wow, I didn't think about this comparison at all until you mentioned it.😲 I like all of them because of how they remind me of the animes I've seen and loved from each era. I also just realized that by 2010, anime characters lose their nose😂

I feel like 90’s was the peak, where artists had developed their unique styles and still had to freedom to show them.

2000's Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is god anime style. Not to mention Cowboy Bebop and Princess Momusuke.

Something I've noticed about the older anime styles is that they seemed to carry an air of nostalgia about them even as they were first being released in the USA. This could be because the early anime styles were somewhat influenced by the Hannah Barbera animation style many of us grew up with in the 70s, and a connection was felt as a result. Maybe it also has something to do with American audiences' exposure to Godzilla, Johnny Sako, etc. I'm not sure. But when shows like Astro Boy, Star Blazers, and Robotech hit American screens in the 80s, they felt like ancient legends to me. This effect also obtained with the first Gen Transformers series, both the comic books and the after school cartoon. The depiction of Cybertron, especially the slum area sequence in the comic book, absolutely evoked that "ancient legend" vibe.

I think I like 90s and 2000s but but I can't complain about the graphic style evolution. Besides, the story has been evolutionary too each time is more crazy

I like top left myself. I don't really concern myself too much with artwork although some are amazing. I just want a good story and characters. I also need fluidity. Some get stuck for me and I get meh on them. I have a major issue watching one piece as it's just all over the place and a 5 episode fight (I'm around episode 50).

Although I find the modern anime style the most aesthetically pleasing out of the lot, it matters less than the storyline (and lore, if applicable). I don't give much weight to nostalgia either, because there's excellent anime across all eras, and nobody should discount one just because it's older or newer. Kaiji is one example of anime with a unique (or some say "ugly") art style but its storyline is its saving grace, as long as viewers can get used to the animation. And I suppose the "zawa.. zawa.." scenes in that may not be quite as memorable with another art style because then it's indistinguishable from other groups of anime that mostly use a similar style (e.g. Kaiji vs 2010s anime). If an anime can successfully transcend their art styles by constantly surprising audiences with the unexpected, I'd say that's the hallmark of excellence. I'll provide three examples to show what I mean: 1) A beautifully-animated horror show that manages to leave viewers with feelings of unease, awe and shock throughout most of their viewing. 2) A show with plain/simple animation but it still blows people's minds because of the original concepts, philosophies conveyed and the amount of thought that went into a deceptively ordinary piece of work. The viewers get revelations from the show, and because they find that rewarding, they continue watching despite the plain animation. 3) A show containing cute animation and characters, yet it can be heartbreaking and disturbing at times. If you know of any anime that are like those three examples I mentioned above, do let me know because I always like having new shows/movies to watch. And I usually appreciate the unorthodox. (gewysig)
