The book is always better. Is it though?
So here's the real question. Is it that the book is always better? Or is it that the source material is always better. For example when I was a kid I read the novelizations of at least one Star wars movie and at least one of The Terminator movies. There have also been comic books released for the actual Star wars movies and some other things. So in those cases is the book better or is the movie better. The real question being is it the source material that is always better. Are there cases where the movie or show is better than the source material? #books #tv (gewysig)

I guess it depends. For me personally, LOTR films are superior than the books. The book's ending is a little bit anti-climactic and the details left behind are not really relevant to the plot (not a Tom Bombadil fan 👎). On the other hand, The Shining is a horror classic, and yet, I think the film does little justice to what Stephen King was trying to portray in the book. It is nicely filmed, but it is emotionally cold. I guess it sometimes depends on which one you experienced first or the vision you have in relation to both. Both are different mediums and you sometimes cannot fully portray on screen what an author tries to convey with words (either for time-saving reasons, budget or to ease the viewer's experience). For me personally, as long as the adaptation preserves the spirit of the book, either one is fine by me.

Novelization of a movie isn't really a book. When people say "book is better" it's really meant as "the original is better". Now Star Wars is a unique thing. Cause you have novelizations on one hand (those are mid, really) and the actual Universe and lore on the other hand (Thrawn trilogy, Han Solo trilogy, X-Wing, Vector Prime and do on). Those are incredible. (gewysig)

I think the medium of books are subject to a lot less limitations than movies! Books can go off on tangents that build the world and characters and lore, movies don’t really do that, every scene in a movie has to fulfill an objective and push the story along, movies are structured very rigidly! A lot more so than books, so I don’t think that it’s a case of books being “better” but I think the freedom writers have in the written form often leads to the story being better in that medium. Depends mate, there's a YouTube channel called lost in translation that goes into this subject. Really it comes down to the director and how they want to put it on screen. If you've seen Master of the Game there is not much difference between the movie and book but the movie is 6 hours long.

I think it’s cool to see books come to life on the screen, like Harry Potter, even though the books are still better I enjoy the films. But it just depends, most of the time the book is better because it’s obviously more descriptive whilst movies tend to fly through scenes that would have been pages long. I do think there’s cases of the movies being better than the original source material. One being “the body” by Stephen king. The movie stand by me is much better as it fleshes out the characters and gives more depth to them. I still enjoyed the book, but the movie is better.
