Avril Elgar was a prominent English actress who skilfully portrayed complex and diverse characters on both stage and screen throughout her acting career. Born on 16th April 1932 in Queniborough, Leicestershire, Elgar knew she wanted to be an actress from an early age. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her stage debut in 1953. She later became an associate member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she impressed audiences with her stage presence and versatility.
Elgar was a highly respected television actress as well, with several notable credits to her name. She appeared in numerous classic British TV shows such as "The Avengers" and "Doctor Who". She also appeared in a number of groundbreaking TV dramas, including the BBC's adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's "Cranford" and the BBC adaptation of John le Carré's "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." Her performances were always highly praised and she became known for portraying strong and believable characters.
Elgar continued to work in theatre throughout her life, appearing in productions such as "The Shell Seekers" and "Pygmalion". In recognition of her contribution to the arts, in 1996 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). She retired from acting in 2006 but remained active in the industry, helping to launch a fund for actors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Her work both on and off stage will always be remembered for her dedication and passion for the arts.
Sadly, Avril Elgar died at the age of 87 on December 24, 2019, leaving behind an impressive legacy in British theatre, television and film.
