Jacques Dufilho was a French actor who was celebrated for his versatile and prolific career in French cinema, television, and the theatre. Born on February 19, 1914, in Bègles near Bordeaux, Dufilho grew up in poverty during the First World War. Despite his humble beginnings, he developed a love for theatre when he was eleven years old, and by the time he was eighteen, he had left his hometown to join a travelling theatre troupe. He later joined the French National Theatre in Paris, where he worked with renowned directors and actors.

Jacques Dufilho made his film debut in the 1940s, appearing in a number of small roles in French movies. However, it was not until the 1950s that he gained widespread recognition for his acting talent. He was known for his exceptional versatility, and he could assume any role with ease, ranging from dramatic to comic. Dufilho's memorable performances include his role as the monk in Robert Bresson's "Les Dames Du Bois De Boulogne" (1945), his portrayal of the lovestruck lawyer in "The Verdict" (1961), and his turn as the doddering grandfather in Bertrand Tavernier's "Death Watch" (1980).

In addition to his work in film, Jacques Dufilho also made a significant contribution to French theatre. Over the course of his long and illustrious career, he appeared in over a hundred plays, working with some of the most distinguished theatre directors of his time. Some of his most notable stage performances include his roles in "La Mouette" (The Seagull) by Anton Chekhov, "Le Cid" by Pierre Corneille, and "Le Malade imaginaire" (The Imaginary Invalid) by Moliere.
