Metta World Peace, born Ronald William Artest Jr., is a retired professional basketball player who is best known for his aggressive defensive skills and off-court antics. He was born on November 13, 1979, in Queens, New York, and grew up in a rough neighborhood. Despite the challenges he faced, he developed a passion for basketball at a young age and went on to have a successful career. Artest attended St. John's University where he played basketball for two seasons before declaring for the NBA Draft. In 1999, he was drafted 16th overall by the Chicago Bulls, where he played for four seasons. He then played for other teams including the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and the China Shaanxi Wolves. Metta World Peace is known for his aggressive defensive skills and his physicality on the court. He has been named to the NBA All-Defensive Team multiple times and was the recipient of the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2004. However, his on-court behavior has also been controversial, especially his involvement in a brawl between the Pacers and the Detroit Pistons in 2004 that resulted in lengthy suspensions and fines for numerous players. Off the court, Metta World Peace has also been known for his activism and for advocating for mental health awareness. He has been open about his own struggles with mental health and has become an advocate for ending the stigma surrounding mental health issues. In 2011, he legally changed his name to Metta World Peace to promote "good will." Despite retiring from basketball in 2017, he remains active in various endeavors, including coaching and mentoring young athletes.
