József Gémes was a prolific Hungarian animator, director and screenwriter celebrated for breaking borders and international recognition. Born in Kiskunfélegyháza, Hungary on September 22, 1941, he discovered his passion for creating animated films as early as in his childhood. He went on to study painting and illustration in Hungary and animation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He started his career at the Pannonia Film Studio in Budapest and soon became one of the studio's most celebrated animators. Gémes drew attention from the global animation community as the director of the internationally acclaimed Hungarian animated feature “Feherlofia” (Son of the White Mare), which won the prizes at the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and the special Grand Prix at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 1981. Throughout his career, Gémes served as a pioneer in creating compelling animated stories for the younger and adult audiences alike. He directed and/or produced numerous films including “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (1979), “The Secret of the Sword” (1985), “The Princess and the Goblin” (1991), and “The Seventh Brother” (1995). His work has been distributed across more than 150 countries, and he received many national and international awards for his contribution to the animation industry. József Gémes passed away on August 29, 2019, at the age of 77. He left behind a remarkable legacy in the Hungarian and international animation world, inspiring a new generation of animators and filmmakers with his distinctive style and storytelling. His work will continue to captivate audiences for years to come, and his contributions to the art of animation will remain an important part of film history.
