Nat King Cole

Nat King Cole Bio

Nat King Cole was an American singer, pianist, and songwriter who became one of the biggest stars of his era in the 1940s and 1950s. Born Nathaniel Adams Coles on March 17, 1919, in Montgomery, Alabama, Cole grew up in Chicago, where he learned to play the piano at a young age. He began performing professionally in the mid-1930s with his brother Eddie, but it wasn't until the late 1940s that he became a sensation on the national stage, releasing hits such as "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Nature Boy." Cole's smooth, velvety voice and impeccable piano skills made him one of the most popular performers of his time, and he went on to release numerous hit songs throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including "Mona Lisa," "Unforgettable," and "The Christmas Song." He also made history as the first Black performer to host his own television show, "The Nat King Cole Show," which aired on NBC in the late 1950s. Cole's success paved the way for other Black performers, but he faced racism and discrimination throughout his career, particularly in the segregated South. Despite these challenges, he continued to perform and record music, earning numerous honors and awards over the years, including multiple Grammys and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Cole died on February 15, 1965, at the age of 45, but his music continues to inspire and entertain audiences around the world to this day.
