Emma Amos

Emma Amos Bio

Emma Amos was a British painter, printmaker, and weaver who was born on March 16, 1937, in London. She was one of the notable Black British artists of the late 20th century. Her works spanned several mediums, including painting, mixed media, and textiles. Emma Amos is considered a pioneer in Black British art, breaking down barriers for Black women artists in a predominantly white, male-dominated industry. Amos attended the Slade School of Fine Art at the University of London in 1955, where she honed her skills as a painter. She went on to earn a degree in Fine Art, becoming the first Black woman to graduate from that institution. Emma Amos later moved to New York, United States, in the 1960s, where she became part of the Black Arts Movement. During this time, her works were influenced by the Civil Rights, Black Power, and the feminist movements. In the 1970s, Emma Amos worked with the revolutionary Spiral group, consisting of Black artists who aimed to challenge the absence of Black artists in the art world. Emma Amos's work dealt with issues of identity, race, gender, and sexuality. Her art explored and challenged the typical gender and race roles that society had imposed on its constituents. She was known for using portraits of African American women in her art, often combining them with other images to create a narrative. Emma Amos's work has been exhibited in various museums and galleries worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Tate Modern. Emma Amos died on May 20, 2020, at the age of 83. Her legacy lives on through her art, which continues to inspire artists and art lovers alike.
