Terry Porter is an American former professional basketball player and coach, best known for his time with the Portland Trail Blazers. Born on April 8, 1963, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Porter grew up with a passion for basketball, honing his skills in his neighborhood and high school teams. He went on to have a successful collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, leading his team to consecutive NCAA Division III championships.
After graduating from college, Porter was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1985 NBA Draft. He quickly established himself as a vital player for the team, providing strong defense and dependable scoring. Known for his cool demeanor and sharp shooting, Porter was widely regarded as one of the best point guards of his era. His time with the Trail Blazers was marked by multiple trips to the playoffs and an appearance in the NBA Finals in 1990.
Porter's professional playing career spanned 17 seasons, during which he also played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, and San Antonio Spurs. He retired from the NBA in 2002 as the Trail Blazers' all-time leader in assists and steals. Following his retirement, Porter transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings. He later served as a head coach for the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns, before rejoining the Trail Blazers as an assistant coach in 2009.
