Born on April 22, 1910, in Mebane, North Carolina, Riggs quickly developed a passion for baseball and showcased his skills at a young age. Riggs primarily played as a third baseman throughout his career, showcasing excellent defensive skills and a consistent batting performance.
During his early years, Riggs played for various minor league teams, including the Atlanta Crackers and Chattanooga Lookouts. His outstanding performance attracted the attention of major league scouts, leading Riggs to make his MLB debut in 1934 with the Cincinnati Reds. Although he had limited playing time in his rookie season, Riggs quickly established himself as a solid third baseman with a strong offensive presence.
In 1935, Riggs became an integral part of the Cincinnati Reds lineup, making significant contributions to the team's success. He enjoyed a breakout season, hitting an impressive .327 with 94 runs batted in (RBIs) and 18 home runs. Riggs continued to showcase his offensive prowess in the following seasons, becoming a consistent .300 hitter and a reliable run producer for the Reds.
Despite his success in Cincinnati, Riggs was eventually traded to the Boston Braves in 1942. He continued to deliver solid performances for his new team, forming an integral part of the Braves' lineup. In 1943, he achieved his career-high batting average of .335, further establishing himself as one of the league's premier third basemen.
Throughout his career, Riggs also had the opportunity to compete in four World Series, including two with the Cincinnati Reds (1939 and 1940) and two with the Boston Braves (1948 and 1950). Although he did not win a championship during his playing years, his contributions and exceptional performances left a lasting impact on the game of baseball.
After retiring from professional baseball in 1951, Riggs remained involved in the sport, working as a coach for various minor league teams. He also served as a scout for the Kansas City Athletics, further showcasing his passion and dedication to the game.
