Davis Payne Bio
Davis Payne is an American former professional ice hockey player who transitioned into a successful coaching career in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on September 24, 1970, in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, Canada, Payne later became an American citizen and is widely recognized for his contributions to the sport in the United States. While he may not be a household name for those outside the hockey community, he has made a significant impact in the sport and has earned recognition for his knowledge, passion, and dedication to the game.
As a player, Payne spent the majority of his career in the minor leagues, primarily playing for the International Hockey League (IHL). He briefly played in the NHL for the Boston Bruins and played his final season with the Frankfurt Lions in the German Bundesliga. However, his true calling came once he hung up his skates and started coaching.
Payne got his start in coaching during his playing career, serving as a player-assistant coach for the Pee Dee Pride in the ECHL. After retiring in 2004, he embraced coaching wholeheartedly, working as an assistant coach for various IHL and American Hockey League (AHL) teams. In 2010, Payne got his first NHL head coaching opportunity when he was named the head coach of the St. Louis Blues.
During his tenure with the Blues from 2010 to 2011, Payne led the team to the playoffs with a strong finish to the regular season. His coaching style was praised for its emphasis on structure and discipline, helping revive a struggling Blues team. Despite his success, Payne's time as head coach was short-lived, as he was replaced the following season. However, he remained in the NHL as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings, and later joined the coaching staff of the Buffalo Sabres.
Although Davis Payne's time as an NHL head coach may have been relatively brief, his impact on the game cannot be overlooked. With a strong background in player development and a deep understanding of the sport, Payne continues to positively influence the next generation of hockey players in the United States. His passion for the game and his ability to impart his knowledge make him an important figure in the world of American hockey.
