Otto Treßler

Otto Treßler bio

Otto Treßler was an Austrian actor who made a significant impact on both stage and screen in the early 20th century. He was born on January 12, 1875, in Graz, Austria, and began his acting career at the Burgtheater in Vienna in 1897. He quickly gained acclaim for his performances in classical roles, including those in plays by William Shakespeare, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Friedrich Schiller. Treßler's success on stage led him to pursue a career in film, and he made his screen debut in 1913 in the film "Die Geierwally" directed by Ewald André Dupont. Over the next few decades, he appeared in dozens of films, often in leading roles. Some of his notable films include "The Song of Songs" (1933), "The Torch" (1934), and "The Heart of a Queen" (1940). He worked with some of the greatest German and Austrian directors of his time, including Fritz Lang, G.W. Pabst, and Ernst Lubitsch. Treßler's acting career flourished during the early years of Nazi rule in Germany and Austria. In 1938, he appeared in the Nazi propaganda film "Der fall Molander" directed by Carl Froelich. He also played a supporting role in the anti-Semitic film "Jud Süß" (1940), produced by the Nazi-run UFA studios. After the Second World War, Treßler was shunned by the film industry and spent his final years in relative obscurity. Today, Treßler's legacy remains somewhat controversial due to his involvement with the Nazi propaganda machine. Nonetheless, his contributions to Austrian and German cinema during the interwar years are undeniable. He was a gifted actor who brought depth and nuance to his performances, and he helped pave the way for generations of Austrian and German actors who followed in his footsteps.
