Colin Higgins was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer who made a significant mark on the entertainment industry throughout his career. Born on July 28, 1941, in Nouméa, New Caledonia, Higgins eventually moved to the United States, where he established himself as a prominent figure in Hollywood. Known for his unique blend of humor and social commentary, Higgins became celebrated for his contributions to the comedy genre.
Higgins began his career as a playwright, studying theater at Northwestern University in Illinois. His interest in storytelling soon led him to pursue a career in filmmaking. In the early 1970s, he gained recognition for his work on the script of the cult classic film, "Harold and Maude," which he also adapted into a novel. This dark comedy, exploring the unconventional romantic relationship between a young man obsessed with death and an elderly woman full of life, became a notable success and launched Higgins' career.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Higgins continued to establish his name in the entertainment industry by creating and directing well-received films. "Foul Play," released in 1978, starred Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn and showcased Higgins' talent for crafting compelling plots with a touch of humor. The movie was a critical and commercial success, further solidifying Higgins' reputation as a skilled filmmaker.
In addition to his work in comedies, Higgins explored various themes and genres during his career. Sadly, Colin Higgins' career was cut short when he passed away on August 5, 1988, at the age of 47, due to complications related to HIV/AIDS.
