Born on 26 June 1933 in Methil, Fife, Torrance's passion for golf was sparked at a young age. Torrance's coaching career took off in the 1970s when he started working with his son, Sam Torrance, who went on to become one of the most successful Scottish golfers of his time. Following this initial success, Bob Torrance became sought after by aspiring professional golfers from all over the world, including prominent figures such as Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley, and Marc Warren.
