Roberts completed his undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1959. He then went on to pursue his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Laboratory, specializing in digital data transmission. In 1967, Lawrence Roberts joined the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), now known as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), as the program manager for the Information Processing Techniques Office.
