I had like a blog where I made daily posts about what the European Dark Ages was like.. but I'm going to start with an excerpt from the 500s Dark Ages novel. Eira is a Romanized Briton living during the Dark Ages, when and where Rome was but a memory. ] Eira's thoughts drifted to Aedan. That’s what she thought his name was. He was a fierce warrior who fought for the Dux in exchange for coin. He had hair that wasn’t like blood so much as the color of the setting sun, and yet it was called “red” anyways. His skin was even more pale than any she had ever seen, and he had little darker dots all over his face. Unlike a civilized person, his hair was not cut short, and his chin free of hair. No, this man kept his hair long and his face was covered in long locks. Eira bit her lip. She needed to find a husband before too long. She should’ve been married off a decade before, but all kinds of differing circumstances bought her time. Her ailing parents, the provable lack of virtue in potential suitors, suitors being of too high or low birth, the lack of a suitable dowry to convince suitors, and finally, a few years where she was sickly. - - [Another Excerpt] Eira at times felt herself flush when she thought of a handsome man, and Aedan did stir something inside of her. Perhaps she would like him to kiss her, and maybe even she would let him take her to bed. The problem was how much he’d want her to part her legs for him. Would he be violent to her, even if she was risking her life by having his babies? The other women spoke enough of these quiet sufferings. Some were lucky, some were not, and still others were content with their situation. The rumors of Aedan spoke of his bravery and courage, his skill in battle. She heard people say that despite fighting for pay, he had taken an oath of loyalty to the Dux and his dedication was unwavering.

Accountability feels “toxic” only to those allergic to responsibility.

Not everyone wants you healed; your healing removes their leverage.

Some parents raise weak adults because they shield their children from accountability.

Protecting your peace will offend those who benefit from your exhaustion.
