Presley Askew (November 17, 1909 – February 7, 1994) was an American basketball and baseball coach renowned for his contributions to collegiate sports, particularly at New Mexico State University and the University of Arkansas. Born in Le Flore, Oklahoma, he graduated from Eastern Oklahoma State College and later attended Oklahoma State University, where he completed his studies in 1930. Askew began his coaching career at Fanshawe Public School, eventually advancing to positions at Red Oak High School and Van Buren High School in Arkansas, where his teams achieved significant success in state championship tournaments.
In 1948, Askew joined the University of Arkansas as an assistant basketball coach and was promoted to head coach the following year. During his three-season tenure from 1949 to 1952, he led the Razorbacks to a shared Southwest Conference regular-season title in his inaugural season. However, after a less successful third season, he departed from Arkansas with an overall record of 35–37.
Askew's most impactful coaching period occurred at New Mexico A&M, now New Mexico State University, where he served as head basketball coach from 1953 to 1965. Under his leadership, the Aggies secured three Border Conference regular-season championships and made two NCAA tournament appearances. Additionally, Askew coached the university's baseball team from 1957 to 1965, further demonstrating his versatility and commitment to collegiate athletics.
In recognition of his contributions, New Mexico State University honored Askew by naming their baseball facility Presley Askew Field in 1981. He was also inducted into the US Bank/NM State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1970. Askew passed away on February 7, 1994, in Las Cruces, New Mexico, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the development of college sports and mentorship of student-athletes.
