Bum Bright, born Otho Q. Bright Jr., was an American businessman and philanthropist, primarily known for his involvement in the oil industry and his ownership of several sports teams. Born on June 4, 1920, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Bright grew up in Texas and attended Texas Christian University (TCU) where he played football. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and later returned to TCU to complete his degree in 1946.
Bright made a name for himself in the oil industry, becoming the president and CEO of his family-owned company, the Bright & Co. He expanded the company's operations and played a significant role in the development of the oil and gas industry in Texas. His success in the energy sector allowed him to venture into other business ventures, including real estate and sports ownership.
Bright's involvement in the sports world began when he purchased the Dallas Cowboys, a professional football team in the National Football League (NFL), in 1984. Under his ownership, the Cowboys experienced considerable success, including winning three Super Bowls in four seasons from 1992 to 1995. However, financial issues forced Bright to sell the team in 1989 to Jerry Jones.
Apart from the Dallas Cowboys, Bum Bright also owned the Texas Rangers, a Major League Baseball team, from 1989 to 1998. Although the Rangers struggled during his ownership, he played a pivotal role in retaining the team in Texas and preventing its possible relocation. Bum Bright left an indelible mark on the sports scene in Texas, showcasing his commitment to the state and its sporting legacy.
Outside of his business and sports ventures, Bum Bright was widely known for his philanthropic efforts. He supported various educational institutions, including TCU, where he donated generously to fund scholarships and infrastructure projects. Bum Bright passed away on December 12, 2004, leaving behind a legacy as a successful businessman, prominent sports figure, and dedicated philanthropist in the state of Texas.
