He died in a climbing accident while attempting to summit Lhotse, the fourth highest peak in the world. Khimichev’s legacy lives on through the Boris Khimichev Foundation, which was founded by his wife, Natalia, after his death. The foundation provides financial support to promote and develop mountain tourism in Russia.
