It seems that way. I'm sure part of it is nostalgia, but I think another factor is that there aren't as many straight ahead horror movies being made now. A lot of very modern ones have a message, or are made to be a metaphor. I'm not saying those are bad things, but a lot of the time it dilutes the horror aspect.  Once in a while we get more of a throwback.  I guess it's four or five years old now but I thought Host had a more old school feel to it, even though it was set in (at the time) the present.

Yes, 100%

Part of that is the heavy cynicism of the audience; we know everything we see is CGI, so why be concerned? Practical effects like “back in the day” hit harder and have a better impact on the audience. It’s all fiction, but when we know *something* is happening to the cast, we get invested.

No one can really be invested when you know that person is reacting to a tennis ball on a stick.
