Born on July 31, 1796 in the city of Koln, Germany, Deburau moved to France at a young age and began performing on the streets of Paris as a young boy. Deburau's career took a major turn in the 1820s when he began performing as the character of Pierrot, a traditional French clown known for his white face and sad expression.
