He studied at the Hellenic Cinema and Television School Stavrakos before embarking on his career as a cinematographer. Arvanitis began working on various short films and documentaries, honing his craft and gaining invaluable experience. It wasn't long before his talent caught the attention of Greek directors who were captivated by his ability to create visually stunning and emotionally compelling scenes.
Arvanitis rose to prominence in the 1970s through his collaborations with influential Greek filmmakers, such as Theodoros Angelopoulos and Costas Ferris. He worked as a cinematographer on Angelopoulos' remarkable films, including "The Travelling Players" (1975), "Voyage to Cythera" (1984), and "Eternity and a Day" (1998), which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Arvanitis' style, characterized by his use of long takes, rich colors, and meticulous attention to detail, greatly contributed to the unique visual language of Angelopoulos' films.
Throughout his career, Arvanitis has worked on various other notable Greek films, including "Rebetiko" (1983) and "Rembetiko" (1983) by Costas Ferris, "Zorba the Greek" (1964) by Michael Cacoyannis, and "Ulysses' Gaze" (1995) by Theo Angelopoulos. He has also collaborated with international filmmakers, such as Francis Ford Coppola on "Tetro" (2009) and Walter Hill on "Geronimo: An American Legend" (1993).
