The last truce
I will return, and in my coming there is no promise of peace. I will return like tragic news in the middle of a still night, knocking on your heart before it reaches your ears. I will be the moment you discover that everything you thought was friendship was merely a truce, and that the road we walked together was paved with mines, not flowers. You will retreat, not out of shame or regret, but because you will see in my eyes what reminds you that you were approaching the mouth of a volcano, mistaking it for a calm lake. You will flee as a defendant flees from the shadow of a judge, and hide as a coward hides from his mirror. And a crow with thin wings will seize you, not to eat you, but to carry you on its wings like a heavy cloud promising rain, yet weak with fertility. Then it will leave you beneath it until you realize that waiting can be worse than thirst, and that illusion is sometimes crueler than reality.
