1moRebuilding, One Step at a Time
A few thoughts from someone who's still rebuilding. A few months ago, I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. For a while, I wasn't sure if I should talk about it publicly. But if sharing my experience helps even one person feel a little less alone, I think it's worth sharing. I'm not sharing this because I've overcome anxiety. I'm sharing this because I'm still rebuilding. One thing anxiety taught me is that it doesn't just affect your mind. It slowly makes your world smaller. Without even realizing it, you begin spending more time inside your thoughts than outside in the world around you. For me, healing didn't begin with a life-changing moment. It began with something incredibly simple. Walking. At first, I walked because I thought I should. Over time, I realized I wasn't just moving my body. I was creating space for my mind to slow down and breathe. Some walks were filled with thoughts. Some were completely silent. Somewhere along the way, I stopped walking just to feel better. I started walking to notice life again. The changing colors of the sky. Sunrises and sunsets. The moon. Trees dancing with the wind. Birds going about their day. Even the occasional cat that somehow managed to make me smile. They had always been there. I had simply stopped noticing them. Around the same time, I also made a conscious effort to reduce my screen time. I realized I wasn't always reaching for my phone because I needed it. Many times, I was simply trying to distract myself from my own thoughts. The less time I spent looking at a screen, the more time I spent looking at the world around me. And something unexpected happened. The world didn't become more beautiful. I simply started noticing its beauty again. Walking became more than exercise. It became my meditation. Not because walking is magical. But because it helped me reconnect with myself and with the world around me. Walking may not be your meditation. Maybe yours is music. Maybe it's prayer. Maybe it's gardening. Maybe it's painting. Maybe it's writing. Maybe it's spending quiet time with someone you love. Or maybe it's something completely different. You don't have to find what worked for me. You only have to discover what helps you reconnect with yourself. One thing this journey has taught me is this: Movement is a privilege. So is being able to pause. To breathe. To look up. To notice life happening around us. Sometimes, healing doesn't begin with a big breakthrough. Sometimes... it begins with putting your phone away, stepping outside, and taking a walk. If you're going through anxiety or any difficult season in life, please don't compare your journey with mine or with anyone else's. Healing isn't linear. Some days you'll move forward. Some days you'll simply pause. Both are part of rebuilding. I'm not at the finish line. I'm simply grateful that today, I'm able to keep walking. If this encourages even one person to step outside, move a little, or spend a little less time staring at a screen today then sharing this will have been worth it. I'm still rebuilding. One breath. One walk. One step at a time. ❤️
