CALM Model

(Criteria for Decision-making that doesn’t require you to be regulated) The CALM Model C — Come back Before deciding, orient to the present moment. One slow breath if that feels comfortable.
Feel your feet or the chair. Look around and name one thing you can see. The purpose is not “be calm”.
It is: Create a little more space between stimulus and action. This has a reasonable evidence base.
Acute stress can impair working memory and cognitive flexibility, both of which matter when evaluating choices.
Slow-paced breathing can influence autonomic activity and HRV, although responses vary and breathing should remain optional rather than compulsory.  AAsk Ask only: “What do I actually know?” Not: “How do I feel about this?” Not: “Does this person seem trustworthy?” Separate what is known from what is being claimed. For example: Known: “This woman says she made $18,000 using this method.” Not yet known: “The method reliably generates $18,000.” That single distinction can interrupt a remarkable amount of online misinformation. LLook Look outside the thing that activated you. Ask: “Can I find another reliable source for this?” Prefer the original evidence when possible. This is essentially the strongest element of lateral reading and SIFT, but CALM deliberately places it after a regulation step because the participant may not initially have full cognitive bandwidth available for evidence evaluation. The rule can be extremely simple: One claim. Two sources. Original if possible. If that cannot be done, the conclusion becomes: “I don’t know yet.” That is not failure.
It is a legitimate decision state. MMove small Ask: “What is the smallest safe, reversible step I can take with what I know?” This is where CALM becomes more than misinformation training. A woman sees: “Start this AI business and make $10,000.” CALM does not require her to determine whether the entire business model is true before doing anything. She can conclude: “The income claim is unverified.
The mechanism looks testable.
I can spend 30 minutes testing demand without spending money.” That’s a very different decision from either: “This is a scam.” or: “I’m buying the $2,000 course.” It returns agency without requiring certainty. Add one rule: CALMCALM Every woman who learns it teaches one other person. Not as homework. As part of learning it. At the end of the five-minute introduction: “Before tomorrow, teach CALM to one person in your world.” That has two evidence-informed purposes. First, explaining material to someone else can strengthen retrieval and organisation of what has been learned, although the strength of the learning-by-teaching effect varies by context.  Second, your environmental intuition has scientific support with an important qualification: social relationships can influence stress responses and emotion regulation, and experimental work has demonstrated social-buffering effects under some conditions.
The mechanisms, strength and applicability are not uniform across people or relationshipsDo not teach: “Regulated people regulate everyone around them.” That’s too absolute. Teach: “Our state is influenced by the people around us.
CALM gives us a simple process we can practise together.” That is defensible. CALM becomes a community language Appropriate for Expansion Circle… Someone posts: “I saw this investment opportunity and I’m about to put $4,000 into it.” Another woman doesn’t tell her what to do. She can simply respond: “CALM?” They both know what that means. Come back.
Ask what you know.
Look beyond the claim.
Move small. No lecture. No shame. No attempt to control her decision. And eventually: “Can someone CALM this with me?” could become community shorthand for: “I’m activated, and I want another brain beside mine while I work through this.” The Circle becomes a useful environment rather than merely a repository of content. Teach it in under five minutes The entire lesson can fit on one card: CALM C — Come back.
 Create a little space. AAsk.
What do I actually know? LLook.
Can I verify it elsewhere? MMove small.
What is the smallest safe, reversible next step? Teach CALM to one other person. Make one sentence the philosophical centre: You don’t need certainty to take a small, informed step. This matters for Expansion Circle because the same model works across online information, money decisions, relationships, opportunities, conflict and moments of overwhelm. Someone receives an upsetting message: CALM. Someone sees an extraordinary business claim: CALM. Someone wants to spend $5,000 impulsively: CALM. Someone feels stuck and cannot determine what to do next: CALM. Someone in the Circle notices another woman becoming overwhelmed: CALM together. The last transition changes regulation from something a woman is expected to privately manufacture into something the community can participate in without taking away her authority. This is aligned with the Expansion Circle as described: small movement, low cognitive load, shared capability, increasing agency. (edited)

The distinction between what someone says and what's actually known does most of the work here. Clean thinking. 🙂
