One book or one multi volume work? Book: Atlas Shrugged. I had to endure that chapter long monologue and so does everyone else. Multi volume: The Fall of the Roman Empire. People think reading about history is mostly dates and trivia, but then you read about history and start noticing the patterns. Though it makes cynics, we need more of that.

Most people have to find knowledge themselves to really gain from it. Being forced to read something would only build resentment. I can't think of any book that would be more use to a person than the books they already gravitate towards, of their of own accord, because they offer something their life is otherwise lacking. But, more to your point, I recommend Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller. Many of us have wounds we can not even identify, this book helps.
