Have you ever read Shogun? Way better than either series but it's very interesting how it is done. It was my intro to Japanese culture and history from a particular western perspective and blurred the lines for me, started seeing the way humanity is closer rather than divided. I'm sure your experience is a bit different but I needed something to shock me to see past the cultural differences...
