[Asian heartbreaking culture] My auntie called my mom she said that my Cousin and her BF want to get married, that supposed to be a happy News! (at least for me). But what happened next was very heartbreaking. My auntie said to my mom: "Imagine he asked to marry her w/ only $3000 in his pocket!"—

— ... you know wedding party these days will cost you at least $12000, minimum, right?? My mom : "I know..." My auntie : "I should tell her that she would never marry him with that $3000!" My mom : "I know, but don't be so hard on her..." My auntie : "Well I have to. She's pretty, she has a good degree. She has a decent job!! She doesn't deserve to marry someone who only has $3000 for a wedding party. Nothing we can do with $3000!" Me in my room, overhearing the whole convos : 😢😢😢 (edited)

I can understand both sides. I was a bridesmaid for this small wedding of 20-30 guests and it costed about 20k CAD. The groom said he had no money and didn't even prepare a dowry or a car to pick up the bride. The bride had to pay for the majority of expenses and the groom's father had to step in and pay for the venue. The groom's mother demanded that the bride follow ancient rituals to kneel and bow down to them at 5:30 am or else the bride won't get to get the groom's "family treasures" (a few gold pieces but not worth much to pawn shops). Everytime I met with the bride, she's frustrated and stressed. It's only been 5 years and she spoke of divorce 3 times already. 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 Her health has also been in decline since then. (edited)
