Being in a happy relationship with my partner has helped me to offer some perspective on this matter. I think one of the biggest challenges today is that while traditional gender roles and expectations/standards in relationships are shifting rapidly especially with changes in work, culture, economy, finances, and expectations around emotional labour. The way men and women are socialised from birth hasn’t kept pace. We're taught outdated scripts about what love and partnership should look like, but then we enter a world that doesn’t reflect those scripts anymore. That creates confusion, resentment, and mismatched expectations. The dating world has changed a lot from what parents/adults have taught/instilled into us. A lot of the disconnect isn’t about people not wanting love or gender wars or late stage capitalism: but about not having the tools or mindset to navigate love in this newer, more fluid context. Relationships today require more self-awareness, communication, and emotional intelligence than ever and most of us weren’t given a great foundation for that.
