As a guy how do you cope with the lack of physical affection when you're single. I don't mean sex, I mean the little things like a hug, a loving touch etc. I've been single for a year and fairly remote with my ex for some time before that but I've noticed that men are reticent to touch each other except for a handshake. So how do you guys cope and make sure you don't take all physical contact from your desired gender as flirtatious?

I don't think there is a special way to get by. For some of us, lack of intimacy and lack of even basic human touch is the norm. I haven't had a relationship in a decade, nor have I ever had a long term relationship at all. For women, that's usually unheard of except by choice, from what I have been able to observe. For those who aren't, it seems more common to some extent. For me, it's my life; it would feel weird if I suddenly started having physical contact in a routine basis after a lifetime without. You just do what you can, and try not to focus on what is beyond your control. I guess that's what I have done. I try not to overthink it. Sometimes I fail at that. Maybe I am an extreme case, as an unusual person with a visible injury, but I can only speak from that experience.

On a daily/public facing level, I don't like to be touched. You're honoured if I extend physical contact toward you past a handshake, so there isn't really opportunity for any contact to be misconstrued. I'm not a germaphobe or anything, I just have a necessity for personal space and boundaries. On a personal level, It's been over a year since I've been close to anyone, let alone been willing to allow anyone close enough to me to expose myself to non-sexual physical intimacy. I miss feeling someone I care about close to me, whether it's holding my hand, curled up on the sofa next to each other or just a gentle touch to let me know they're around me.
