I am glad I have been single for as long as I have been. I do think it has made me less selfish. I never realized how helpless or pampered I was until I was forced to be my own captain and learn to comfort my own self. I don't think humans are necessarily designed for life alone, and this economy makes having more than 1 income a necessity... but if you go through it for a significant amount of time, it makes what's important more clear. Hence why I can't date anyone in their 20s or someone who has never experienced such coming out of a marriage. It would help if someone had a better understanding of my experience rather than just words. It's not absolute, but something I have noticed. I am beyond starving for attention or crying about it, I simply want to give it. But I have noticed my rhythm for it is off because I have often been without. I think others think there is something wrong with them when they notice this about themselves too, if they do, after having gone through a dry spell. I am glad my son knows to ask for hugs from me without fear and I try to remind myself to give them randomly because it is healthy. I don't know that I like them very much anymore. That's the last part of my resentment, that could perhaps only be resolve with consistent care in the future. Maybe most humans want someone needy because that's the easiest to control when withholding, but is that respectable? I am not one to like act like I don't argue or have imperfections, but toxicity is not the way, even if it is most often portrayed in songs or movies.

One thing kids don't learn when growing up in a loving & healthy family and then living with roommates/family in college (and potentially living with family after graduating) is the amount of things you need to take care of when on your own. Chores. Bills. Remembering everything. Pets. Kids. Neighbors. Legal things. Understanding their own social and emotional needs. It's made even worse when they have someone in their life romantically. Doesn't even have to be a relationship. Just pining for someone counts. You never build that understanding of yourself and accepting being single. Like you said, it's unfortunately easy to control and manipulate someone who needs you, whether that's affection, money, support, etc. And society is still really unkind to folks who get trapped in those situations.
