Compatibility isn't about finding the "perfect" person

You know... simply meeting someone is fairly easy. Building something that actually lasts? That's the difficult part. There's one thing I always feel is crucial, and yet most people never seem to think about. It comes down to understanding that you have something to offer the world, and other people have something to offer you, too. The problem is that what we have to give - what others are looking for, or can give us - isn't always compatible. For example, imagine someone whose biggest passions are gaming and anime meeting someone who spends every weekend reading novels, hiking, and has absolutely no interest in either of those other things. Neither person is wrong. They simply value different things, and over time, those differences become increasingly difficult to bridge. Compatibility isn't about finding someone who likes everything you like. It's about finding someone whose interests, values, lifestyle, and way of seeing the world overlap enough that both people naturally enrich each other's lives. This is also why I always find it strange when I see people saying they want a "goth girl", a "gym guy", "someone submissive", or any other label. They seem to forget that these aren't collectible personality types - they're human beings. A goth girl isn't just "goth". She might love philosophy, horror films, classical music, astronomy, painting - or none of those things. A gym guy isn't just someone who lifts weights - he's an entire person with his own interests, fears, goals, and values. Reducing people to an aesthetic or a single characteristic often leads us to fall in love with a complete fantasy, instead of the real person standing in front of us. Perhaps that's why so many first conversations end in disappointment. People spend so much time looking for labels that they forget to discover the individual behind them. At the end of the day, relationships aren't built by matching categories.
