Perceptions

A lot to do with all living things is their perceptions! Wild animals will attack or run when approached because they are pushed into perceiving life in survival mode: eat, survive, breed. They are consistently in danger, and this is their world and their perception most of the time. But to come across someone that helps them and is eventually trusted by the wild one, then the animal gains a new view, a calm to advance how they perceive that person or animal. I feel like animals are a lot smarter than what we think. Sure, we use food to train, but it’s deeper than that. Now with people, most of the time any conflict, debate, argument, or domestic dispute with loved ones is a clash between two beliefs or perceptions that they have been conditioned to or have experienced certain situations and scenarios while growing up. This gives them a certain view on life. A fair percentage of people have the best interests at heart, but their morals are in different places, which may clash with others. For instance, you could both be trying to achieve the same goal or explain the same outcome, but how the other person says it doesn’t make sense because their world doesn’t run like that. Another thing is how you perceive what they are saying, and your mood can affect that. Someone could be angry, for instance, and you could write the nicest message, but because it's long and they are in an angry state, they will perceive the message in a negative way. I will use fear as an example: if someone’s scared, you, shown you an emotion that you’ve had trauma with in the past even though that person is different and expresses themselves differently. Someone that's generally really cares about someone a lot and is being benevolent or even altruistic towards them but is perceived as manipulative, condescending, naive, gullible, or duplicitous. Also, like if someone is a worry wart and overly cares, which drives them to check up on where the cared-for person is frequently to ease their mind but is interpreted as jealous, controlling, or not trusting them. Now let's combine them: they both have their fears and experiences that lead them to different perceptions. The worry wart's general care and way of showing it conflict and do the opposite reaction. The more she gets fed up and lacks in response, the more worried he gets; the fear ignites, and the more controlling he seems. Even though they both love each other, their boundaries conflict and cause misperception. She doesn’t want to be controlled, and he doesn’t want to lose her, thus the love feels weak. His view is, "how can you not worry or contact me, she mustn’t truly care," and hers is, "I won’t push and check on him because I trust him." Now they both have trust but perceive it differently. He sees being worried as caring or loving; she sees worry as distrust but shows her care in a different way. Her love is trust, trusting him to go about his day. Maybe the less she asks for the whereabouts means the more respect or trust she offers due to previous toxic relationships but for him, it can be perceived as disrespect and being uncared for. This can also lead him to start distrusting her. He might think, “why can’t she just let me know and ease my mind” while she's thinking, “why can't he respect my boundaries.” Clear and effective communication, especially when discussing emotional topics, is crucial for ensuring messages are correctly perceived and understood. In-person communication is considered to have the best chance of conveying emotions and intentions accurately, with a perceived effectiveness rate of 93%. However, even in face-to-face interactions, various factors such as individual perceptions, emotions, and external circumstances can influence the communication process and potentially lead to misinterpretations. Video calls are rated at around 55% effectiveness, followed by phone calls at 45%, and text messaging at approximately 7%. The impact of emotions on interpretation is particularly significant, as our feelings can color how we receive and process information. Emotions can play a role in filtering the content of a message, focusing more on the emotional tone rather than the actual words used. This subjective interpretation can lead to misunderstandings, even in well-written messages from someone we care about or regarding something important to us. Here is an example how emotions and perceptions can influence the interpretation of a message: - Initial Message: "I thought you said I could go over to theirs tomorrow, I didn’t steal the car. I got confused when you asked if I was going there to play games and I said no to do homework, you said oh ok. So I naturally thought you just didn’t want me playing games there and that I assumed it was alright to go there." - Alternative Interpretation due to Emotional Bias: "You said I could go over theirs tomorrow, I didn’t steal the car. I got confused you asked if I was playing games and I said no homework, you said it’s ok, so I thought no playing games there was the assumption and that it was alright." - Misunderstanding and Accusation: "Leads to you just talking your way out of it, you stole the car and disrespected, and twisting it onto me, saying I said you could." - Clarification and Apology: "No, I'm not. I said I thought you said it was alright in the last convo; sorry, I misunderstood." - Alternative Clarification: "No, I'm not; you said it was alright in the last convo; sorry, you misunderstood." It’s always about how you perceive or the perception you have that dictates a lot about many things and drama in life. This extends from religions, warring over whose god or which story is correct. When in reality, it’s how stories have been perceived over time. They worship and originate from the same religion but over the years, through many different perceptions, the stories have been dictated, changed, and misperceived. Instead of focusing on individual words in the book or dwelling on misinterpretations and perceptions, it can be more productive to accept that you all have the same goal but perhaps have different ways of perceiving it. In my perception, God wouldn’t want you killing each other over it. If your god or religion commands that, maybe try seeking guidance directly rather than solely relying on sources like preachers or influences. It’s crucial to trust your own perceptions and interpretations instead of allowing external influences to control your perceptions. Past instances where individuals have used religious beliefs to control people’s perceptions demonstrate the significance of individual discernment. Beware of how external factors can impact your perceptions, including your own introspection. Don't be afraid to expand your mind and allow your perception to evolve. Be mindful of how others may view your perception; they could offer pieces of the puzzle that contribute to a greater understanding of life and each other. 🤍🌙
