Simplest answer: It's a group of people where one is a storyteller and the rest of the people play characters of their own creation interacting with the story world; they choose what their characters do in the story as it moves forward, and dice are used to determine the success or failure of actions. The system has rules for making characters (D&D has several iterations, depending how far back you go) that players follow, and the DM immerses them in a world they can interact with. That's the short answer.

Are these all intentionally wrong answers? Its a role-playing game. Its like when you used to play pretend when you were a kid, but there are rules so no one goes: "I hit you!" "Nuh-uh". Mostly you say you want to do something, you roll dice, and then the game master lets you know if you fail or succeed depending on your roll/how difficult the action is.

It is a game where both the players and dungeon master cooperately and disbandedly form a story full of characters, lives and deaths, friendships/rivalry, heroism/villainy and everything in between. It can feel both fair and unfair at the same time but, a good game takes the good and bad results to make it work in the story. Failed saving throw maybe has someone disguised as an animal (like a bear) to reveal themselves as a gnome, a great critical role may absolutely destroy a for in the most random of ways. You work together and at times separately to enjoy a world where things aren't always as black and white with a good/bad roll.

Session 0
During session 0 with my current dnd group, we learned we shouldn't get into a lot of combat for the lack of tank pcs. But somehow my drow rogue is the best option for the party's tank. An I am going how the hell that happened. I was the tank the last time lol.
