"Normative" vs "Positive" economics - the difference is crucial to discussing policy

Normative - is about what "ought" to be (example: "poverty is bad") Positive - is about the "how" and the specific consequences of action (examples: "would X reduce poverty?" or "why are people poor?") This distinction plays a much better role in economics than most sciences because there is such varied ideas about what "ought" to be for humanity. A common mistake is to criticize normative claims on positive grounds, and vice versa. What has been a term or idea that helped you understand economics better?
