Are suburbs good or bad for the world?

The US uses more gas than other country (we're 4% of the world population but use 20% of the world's gasoline). We've historically had much cheaper gas than other countries. The abundance of cheap gas for decades has led to the creation of suburbs. Suburbs are sprawling neighborhoods located outside metro areas where people live and commute from, leading to extremely high gas use per person. Are suburbs a net negative to society? They certainly are for the environment.

The suburban "sprawl" makes it difficult for groups that do not typically drive or have cars. The elderly isn't able to take care of their needs so they end up in retirement homes. Children are also affected, needing their parents to go anywhere. Their lack of independence leads to isolation and frustration which then leads to higher incidences of suicide and school shootings. Spreading out to the suburbs also meant the cost of infrastructure maintenance increased. The "sprawl" meant building new roads and other utilities, while infrastructure in urban areas were neglected. I'm avoiding issues of racism and privileges.
