Mythical creatures
I know the Little Mermaid movie just came out and all but in your honest opinion do you think mermaids exist or used to? When I was younger I was always obsessed with mermaids and was convinced they were for sure real.

I'd stronly suggest you watch the mockumentarry about mermaids. I forgot what it was actually called. Also in multiple fantasy books the theory is that the magical world separated itself from the nonmagical. Lets say hypotheticaly this is true reality then it is most likely that mermaids would also exist their. Another example could be different dimension theory. Though i only know the cliffnotes. But lets imagine that darwins theory took place in a world where the awuatic creature that came to land and eventually evolved into humans, had remained in the ocean but its evolution would take the same route it is probbable that you would get something closely related to mermaids/merfolk. So even if its not a thing in our world it could be a thing in a different dimension. And for my final example outer space is wide and big hard to belief we are the only life out there. Take an aquautic planet with life and who knows. These are only elaborations of probability though. Do with it what you like :)

We have explored a greater percentage of the vastness of space (observable universe) than the depths of our own oceans, so we don't really know anything about the dark depths. And even in the areas that we have, it wouldn't be hard for an intelligent species to hide from us. So there is no way to tell scientifically, but there are references to something akin to merfolk in almost every ancient culture around the world. I have several thoughts on what happened to them if there was at one point an intelligent underwater sapien like lifeform, especially if the where man eaters like many of the myths say. The most logical by my reasoning is that they went extinct, or started going extinct, during the industrial revolution, because of pollution. Also as man became more dangerous due to our technology, the hunters became the hunted. A mermaid can't lure a man to his death if it has a harpoon through its chest. And if we didn't cause them to go extinct, then it's possible that they decided we became to dangerous and/or disgusting and fled deeper and farther from shore and decided to hide from us.
