Why are people scared of the word 'Feminism'?

Usually people are in agreement with the idea for which feminism stands, they believe in equality and upliftment of marginalized. But are somehow "scared" of calling themselves feminist. Whats so scary about a word having a feminine root when the we don't mind calling ourselves 'mankind'.? Isn't that just deep rooted patriarchy?

Yeah, it seems only bad for people who don't understand what feminism is

Because people prioritize what the word feminism makes them "feel" without actually learning what feminism is.

Hi Ishi, Cool question. I was thinking the same thing in my 20s and after much consideration/research concluded that:- Feminism was an Orwellian-style term coined specifically to denigrate, discredit, obfuscate and confuse. While at the time claiming and ‘owning’ the word was a necessary (and awesomely successful) powerplay / cultural counter manoeuvre. The word is now nevertheless well on its way to fulfilling its original intentions:- to obfuscate, confuse and disguise ulterior agendas as seemingly virtuous. As Orwellian (and/or conceptually nebulous) verbiage inevitably do, sooner or later. We had (and still have) the original, authentic, inclusive words the movement chose for itself… to represent what was being demanded; Egalitarianism. Equality. These were our choice of words, before the movement’s hand was forced into neutralising (by claiming) the potent, negative media/PR effects of the newly coined smear word - feminism. It’s now coming full circle, back to being increasingly perceived (as the word’s design intended) as a smear word for an irrational, dogmatic, radicalised super-heated movement bent towards covert superiority. As it was foisted upon us as part of historical power games. The movement did what was necessary at the time. And won. But that means we get to put it down and revert to the clean, holistic, inclusive, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin; unambiguously authentic words we actually chose originally for the movement … whenever we want. Now would be a good time. imho. So I have zero problems with any person who has already chosen to consign to personal history ‘feminist’ as a self-descriptor, because they’ve simply updated to the source concept: egalitarian. Other groups/movements have also had to ‘take ownership’ of words meant originally to convey contempt for same/similar reasons. And they should also (imo) get to decide when those ‘de-fanged’ words are consigned to history… because the cultural power move has played out its usefulness successfully; and the words have because divisive (in other ways) between folks who would otherwise remain more united.
