Thinking of movies. Can you name a movie that managed to go above and beyond, in portraying one or multiple topics that would, normally, be considered taboo or daring, in spite of the high risk of failure?

Personally, American History X is one of my favourite movies and I feel it was very daring, for its time, in terms of the array of sensitive "topics", they not only touched on but even delved into.. it could have been a huge flop and somehow, it got through to many.
