Roti Buaya is a specialty bread from the Betawi tribe (Special Capital Region of Jakarta) whose shape is inspired by a crocodile and is about 50cm long (the one in the photo is the small version, even it can be 2 meter long and that's the largest version). This bread has a meaning as an expression of the loyalty of a married couple to live together, sailing the household ark until the end of life. Roti buaya appeared when the Europeans at that time gave flowers to their partners, so from this the Betawi people made roti buaya as a form of local competition to the Europeans at that time because it had a deeper meaning. The choice of crocodile as the inspiration for this bread is in accordance with the behavior of crocodiles that will only mate once. This bread is usually used as a handover at weddings, where the groom will give this bread to the bride and there are usually a pair (2 pieces of bread). In addition, roti buaya also symbolizes patience, virility, economic security, and hope. This bread will also be given to unmarried relatives so that they can find a mate soon. Roti buaya was once only available for weddings and other special occasions and was in the form of ordinary bread, now it can be enjoyed at any time and added fillings inside such as chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and so on.
