Absolutely they can be friends. I have more female friends than I do guy friends. I don’t really have a desire to date anymore anyway and they know that. It’s definitely possible to have platonic friends of the opposite sex.

Yes, I think it's possible. But I think that many people have experience of being just friends with someone representing the opposite sex and then the other one has other intentions, anyway. Then you might become cautious for starting that kind of relationships.
