We're in a drought

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I feel like we're in a gaming drought. The landscape of gaming has become so over saturated with open world games that they've become monotonous and repetitive. It's the same old fetch quests, and maybe a good boss fight or two. I think this needs to be the return of more linear games with less open areas so they can focus on telling a better story rather then an empty open world.

I stopped buying games a while ago to really dig into my backlog. I've never played Day of the Tentacle or Broken Sword 2 before, as an example. Not sure what your backlog is looking like, but there's value in going back and replaying a classic or giving a chance to a game you didn't have time for or didn't have a chance to play previously for whatever reason. It's also interesting to play games that inspired more recent ones. I watched a really interesting YouTube video recently about Wizardry as a series, and the many, many, many franchises it inspired.

This is something I've always struggled with myself. I think it's all about balance and some games do open world and story better than others. Games like Red Dead Redemption are a good example of how it can be done.
