Why do you think so?

Studies have actually found that it may decrease violent tendencies in adults by giving them an outlet.

Could you find me some, to spare me from fighting my laziness? btw, I think the question of whether or not games (or any media for that matter) is a pretty testable hypothesis, so it'd be more productive to think of it empirically

No. At the end of the day, an adult should know what's fiction and what's is realistic. Even for minors, they should know majority of the time, games are games.

For my case and my siblings, we never made things to get criminal; so we played violent games as inner-vengeance kind of thing to destress ourselves. GTA San Andreas ftw 😂🤣

I feel that it's not the violent games that make people violent, moreso the online interactions people have between each other. It's more psychological, us trying to be better than other people at a certain thing or game and when you introduce other people and are forced to play on teams with them, it gives you an outlet to blame your teammates for your own incompetence and why you didn't do better than the other team. With enough screaming of derogatory terms at another individual in the game going unpunished, it spills over into daily life and can eventually lead to violence. The same can happen if you are the person being screamed at. You might keep getting tired of it and burst out. It can also be an outlet for some so they use video games instead of real life to relieve their stress and violent tendencies.

I can’t say for everybody, but for me there is a huge difference between fiction and reality. I wouldn’t hurt a fly IRL

I think at the core violent people are violent people. There's a lot of other factors that are determining that aggression. I think video games give an outlet for people that might be a little bit more of a violent nature, but I don't think it makes them violent. If anything it just helps prevent aggression IRL

Violent people exist even before the videogames, so where is the explanation? If someone is violent it’s because of other reasons and motivation. If that person used to play a videogame, it’s just a coincidence. In the worse case maybe it could show an idea of how to “act”, but the same can be done by tv shows, movies, theaters, books and art.

They can influence certain things, but the preexisting mentality has to be there. Whatever we consume, becomes a part of us. That's basic psychology. People will gravitate toward certain things and it may be on a course of simulated gratification of some kind. But no, typically they are violent to begin with, but for a small number that are impressionable, it may be the start that kind of impulse.

Not at all, this is exactly the same as "punk music causes violence" or "Dnd causes satanism" or "Gorey movies make people want to be violent". Children before and during adolescent will emulate, so age rating perfectly sensible. But someone can't be driven to violence by a work of fiction by its self. To make someone violent from a work of fiction you need to convince them it's nonfiction.

Nope. That thesis has been scientifically disproven. Instead, video games has been shown giving healthy brain stimulation, increasing problem-solving skills and providing stress relief. If anything, video game players might be less violent 🤷♀️

I don't think it's good for small children to excessively play violent videogames but I don't think playing violent videogames will make someone violent.

So do I personally believe they do? No. But also a number of scientific studies actually show that people that play violent video games tend to be less violent in general. Can you find violent people that like video games? Yes. Is that the cause? Almost always it's a no. Normally the violence is caused by bullying, abuse, mental illness (varying forms of), or just strait up hating your own life.

It's up to parents to teach their kids right from wrong. But for some kids it may desensitize them..

Not any more than violent books, movies, TV shows, music, real life events throughout all of history, etc. Violence has always been part of humanity with or without it being depicted in entertainment mediums, and always will be part of humanity.

You can't hide them from violence for their whole lives. Humans are violent, nature is violent, violence is everywhere if you look hard enough. I think it's better to introduce it to them through games or cartoons as a safe inlet/outlet environment, it lets them come to terms with it at their own pace. What's making people more violent is a growing trend of intolerance and rejection of different ideas. Every year it gets a little harder to have constructive discussions with people of opposing views on controversial topics.

I think they can stimulate violent feelings in already violent people, but for most people it just drives competition which is hard not to be passionate about

Violent games desensitize you. Anger makes you violent. I don't think they are related. It one of those weird cases, when a word is used to name two different things.

Do violent movies make people violent? No. It's just desensitized people. Violent people are not created from mere mass market entertainment.

I think there is a side of us that contains aggression as a mean to survive, and alot of the time in the civilized world we treat that side similarly to wisdom teeths, serve no real and current purposes. Videos games can be violent, and with increasing graphic quality it can come across realistic. Regular individuals who play them may get some sastifaction from the experience, but everyday life normalcy will smooth out those hyped emotions. In some pockets of society that side in our children are activated by circumstances and family dynamic, so we see children being violent to each other or in crimes. As adults we attribute their behavior to their media intakes, not the parental figures or traumas they experienced. (Of course, few who are naturally violent can come from healthy environment.) So, no, I think children can become violent, but it’s more likely from seeing or experiencing violences from adults in real life. Edit: I hope I add something to the convo haha

I don’t think so. I’ve been playing mortal kombat since it came out and I’ve yet to rip off someone’s head. I thought about it when I worked retail though 🤷🏻♂️
