Ethiopia is one of the most beautiful and fertile countries in Africa. Contrary to the perception that the country is affected by famine and drought like other African countries. It has many diverse sights like forts, deserts and rare wildlife. The main feature of Ethiopia is the calendar with thirteen months in a year. There are many cultures around the world that follow their own calendars that are not identical to the Western Gregorian calendar. However, they all follow the rule of 12 months in a year. But in an Ethiopian calendar, a year consists of 13 months. That means Ethiopia is seven years behind the Gregorian calendar, the world reached 2022 but it is now 2015 in Ethiopia!! (seven years behind) Ethiopians celebrated the Millennium on September 11, 2007; This is because the Ethiopians followed the same calendar that was amended by the Roman Church in AD 525. The first 12 months have 30 days. The last month known as "pagume" has five or six days in a leap year. Ethiopia still uses its ancient calendar. But now most Ethiopians know about the Gregorian calendar. Some use both calendars. The country celebrates some important festivals that are different from other parts of the country. Ethiopia is the only African country not under colonial control. In 1935, the Italians were able to colonize it and rule the country with the army for six years. But the Ethiopian forces resisted military rule all that time. Finally the country was freed from its oppressors.
