RIP Queen Anne 1536.05.19
Today in 1536, England's Queen Anne Boleyn was executed after being falsely convicted of adultry, treason, and incest. Her relationship with King Henry VIII lead him to break with the Catholic Church and found The Church of England. People will say the relationship is why he divorced Queen Catherine of Aragon, but he was already regretting his marriage before he met Anne. After being crowned, Anne gave birth to the future Queen Elizabeth I; however, after multiple miscarriages, Henry fell out of love with her and wanted to move on to Lady Jane Seymour in his determination for a son. Many remember Anne as a religious figure for the Protestant movement; however, personally, I agree more with Claire Ridgway (The Anne Boleyn Files) that Anne's issues with Catholicism were more political than religious. Anne has fascinated me for years; especially, due to my passion for 16th century literature. I try to honor her memory every year. 💜
