#OTD World War II: Operation Vengeance

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Navy and the architect of the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, was killed when the plane that he was on was shot down by U.S. Army fighter pilot Thomas Lanfier Jr.. American naval intelligence had intercepted and decoded a Japanese message that included the itinerary for an inspection tour that Yamamoto was making of the Solomon Islands. The body of Yamamoto, who was mortally wounded by Bougainville Island, was found the next day by a Japanese search party. Admiral Matome Ugaki who was in the other bomber crashed into the ocean and was one of three survivors, the others being the bomber's pilot Hayashi and another staff officer, Kitamura.

#OTD World War II: Doolittle Raid

16 US Army Air Force B-25 bombers launched from USS Hornet attacked Tokyo, Yokohama, Yokosuka, Kobe, Osaka, Nagoya, and other targets in the Japanese home islands at about 1200 hours. Most of the bombers would fly on to crash land in or bail out over China, while one landed in Russia and the crew were interned by the Soviets, who had a non-aggression treaty in place with Japan.

#OTD World War II: Angler POW escape: 80 German prisoners of war attempted to escape from the Angler POW camp near Neys Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. Most were quickly apprehended except for two Horst Liebeck and Karl Heinz-Grund, boarded a westbound freight train and made it to Medicine Hat, Alberta before being recaptured and returned to the Angler camp. Though they were given 28 days of solitary confinement at the Camp for their actions, they were asked to sign autographs in Alberta before returning and were greeted upon their return by the Commandant who said, "As a sportsman, I congratulate you…" Horst Liebeck was sent back to Germany after the War with the other POWs, but he later returned to Canada and got a job there.

Absolute truth

Written by Scottish-born composer Peter Dodds McCormick and first performed in 1878, Advance Australia Fair was officially declared the national anthem by the Governor-General, Sir Ninian Stephen, on 19 April 1984. This version is one of the earliest recordings, thought to be made in 1915, when Australian troops were landing in Egypt.

The national colours of Australia, green and gold, have strong environmental connections. Gold conjures images of Australia’s beaches, mineral wealth, grain harvests and the fleece of Australian wool. Green evokes the forests, eucalyptus trees and pastures of the Australian landscape.

Green and gold are also the colours of Australia’s national floral emblem, "the golden wattle".

Over 300,000 encircled German troops in the Ruhr region of western Germany surrendered.

The first large-scale Asian-African Conference (Indonesian: Konferensi Asia-Afrika), also known as the Bandung Conference. It was a meeting of Asian and African states, most of which were newly independent, which took place on 18–24 April 1955 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. The twenty-nine countries that participated represented a total population of 1.5 billion people, 54% of the world's population. The conference was organized by Indonesia, Burma (Myanmar), India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and Pakistan and was coordinated by Ruslan Abdulgani, secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The conference's stated aims were to promote Afro-Asian economic and cultural cooperation and to oppose colonialism or neocolonialism by any nation.

#OTD World War II: Gardelegen massacre

German SS and Luftwaffe troops, while fleeing Allied advance with 1,016 political and military prisoners, deemed the prisoners too weak to continue marching. The prisoners were locked them inside a barn near Gardelegen, Saxony, Germany, which was then set afire. The crime was discovered two days later by Company F, 2nd Battalion, 405th Infantry Regiment, U.S. 102nd Infantry Division, when the U.S. Army occupied the area. Eleven prisoners were found alive seven Poles, three Russians and a Frenchman. The testimonies of survivors were collected and published by Melchior Wańkowicz in 1969, in the book From Stołpców to Cairo. Gardelegen became a part of the newly established German Democratic Republic in 1947 and is now in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

#OTD World War II: Battle of Narvik 

German destroyer Z2 Georg Thiele is forced to beach itself after taking damage from British vessels. Korvettenkapitän Max-Eckart Wolff, the ship's captain, ordered her run aground to allow her crew to abandon ship safely. Fourteen men were killed during the battle and another 28 wounded. The surviving crew of the ship took part in the land fighting at Narvik in the following weeks. Wolff served as a battalion commander in the Marine-Regiment Berger during the land battle. He was awarded the Iron Cross First Class on 12 May 1940 and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross the following August for his command of Thiele at Narvik. The ship later broke in two and capsized. Today, the wreck is one of the most popular diving sites in Narvik. It also appeared in documentary series Abandoned Engineering, season 2 episode 7 Germany's Lost Warship.

#OTD World War II: Battle of Berlin, begins.

The Soviet Army begins its Berlin campaign with spectacular display of artillery, 8,983 Soviet artillery pieces, up to 270 guns every kilometer, hurling a stockpile of seven million shells (1.2 million on the first day alone) at the German defenses on the Oder-Neisse River line and throughout Berlin and its surrounding areas. The bombardment signals the beginning of the offensive to take the German capital.
