March 2, 1942 #OTD World War II: HNLMS Banckert (Pictured) is scuttled at Surabaya, Dutch East Indies after being damaged by Japanese aircraft between February 24 and 28. The ship would later be raised on March 20, 1944 by the Japanese and attempt to repair the ship, but repairs would never be completed and later was reacquired and eventually expended as a target ship in the Madura Strait in September 1949.
