Something I’ve been thinking about.
I know that we should refrain from idolizing people in history (even though a lot of people find it hard to do so). However, like dealing with most people, people have a flaws and strengths. Also, with history, you have to take into account the time period. I don’t know… how do you approach reading about historical figures?

It's who writes about the person. A simple example. Imagine anyone from your childhood: now imagine a person from your childhood that you liked and a person you hated. What are you memories filled with? All happy moments or all sad moments right?! You have to really digg deeper to get the wholistic view of the person and even then you are just remembering an echo of an individual. There is your first person individual perspective of what it means to read about a historical figure. Some texts will idolize them, some will demonize them and some will be neutral. However if you limit your knowledge to just a single text then you are bound to those writer's research and their bias. It takes real digging to even glimpse at who the historical figure really was. And time period doesn't matter once enough data is gathered. The minutia of norms falls apart and you see the actions and choices that individual made. Then you can pretend to assume their character and personality. (edited)

I'm open to a nice debate on this topic
Now i remember when people would say "why is history taught in school?" So I'm curious what everyone thinks. Should history be continued to be taught in school or not?

Favourite ancient military unit
Just out of curiosity, if you could choose one of the ancient military units, which one would be your favourite and why? For example, I would still choose Leg XIII of the Ancient Rome, however it would be still shame not to mention other legs, or even Persian Immortals.

They were ahead of us in everything..
What technique or tool did they have to be able to carve this statue on the hardest types of marble with such amazing precision? It could only be if they had advanced techniques, because now, despite the claim of technology and progress, we don't see such a sculpture in our time.
