The West Wall Medal (German: Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen) was a decoration of Germany. It was instituted on 2 August 1939 and was given to those who designed and built the fortifications on Germany's western borders, known as the Westwall or, in English, the Siegfried Line, between 15 June 1938 to 31 March 1939. On 13 November 1939 eligibility was extended to include servicemen of the Wehrmacht who served on the Westwall for at least ten weeks. In all 622,064 medals were awarded until 31 January 1941, when awards of the medal ceased.

In 1944, after the allied invasion, the medal was re-instituted and awarded to those who renovated and strengthened the fortifications on the western borders. This version of the medal was commonly known as the "Defence Wall Honor Award", to distinguish the decoration from its 1939 counterpart.

It was awarded to over 800,000 men in total by the end of the war.

#OTD World War II: The Battle of Halbe began on the Eastern Front.

German General Theodor Busse commanding the German 9th Army encircled in a large pocket in the Spree Forest region south-east of Berlin, attempted to break out westwards through the village of Halbe and the pine forests south of Berlin to link up with the German Twelfth Army commanded by General Walther Wenck with the intention of heading west and surrendering to the Western Allies. To do this, the Ninth Army had to fight its way through three lines of Soviet troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front under the command of Marshal Ivan Konev, while at the same time units of the 1st Belorussian Front, under the command of Marshal Georgy Zhukov, attacked the German rearguard from the northeast. After heavy fighting, about 30,000 German soldiers just over one third of those originally in the pocket reached the comparative safety of the Twelfth Army's front lines. The rest were either killed or captured by Soviet forces.

#OTD World War II: Battle of Berlin 

The Soviet 1st Belorussian Front and 1st Ukrainian Front continued to tighten the encirclement, severing the last link between the German IX Army and the city. Elements of the 1st Ukrainian Front continued to move westward and started to engage the German XII Army moving towards Berlin.

#OTD World War II: After sundown, Albert Speer (Pictured) bid his final farewell to AH. He admitted to AH that he had sabotaged his scorched earth policies, and AH forgave him for disobeying the order. Speer toured the Chancellery in Berlin, Germany for the last time before leaving for Hamburg, Germany.

#OTD Philippe Pétain, or Marshal Pétain, French general who attained the position of Marshal of France at the end of World War I, during which he became known as "the Lion of Verdun" (French: le lion de Verdun). From 1940 to 1944, during World War II, he served as head of the collaborationist regime of Vichy France. Pétain, who was 84 years old when he became Prime Minister, remains the oldest person to become the head of state of France. During World War I, Pétain led the French Army to victory at the nine-month-long Battle of Verdun. After the failed Nivelle Offensive and subsequent mutinies, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief and succeeded in restoring control. Pétain remained in command for the rest of the war and emerged as a national hero.  On 17 June 1940, with the imminent Fall of France and the government desire for an armistice, Prime Minister Paul Reynaud resigned, recommending to President Albert Lebrun that he appoint Pétain in his place, which he did that day, while the government was at Bordeaux. The government then resolved to sign armistice agreements with Germany and Italy. The entire government subsequently moved briefly to Clermont-Ferrand, then to the spa town of Vichy in central France. It voted to transform the French Third Republic into the French State, better known as Vichy France, an authoritarian regime that was allowed to govern the southeast of France and which collaborated with the Axis powers. (Died: 1951), was born on this day in Cauchy-à-la-Tour, French Empire.

#OTD Ernst-Robert Grawitz, German physician during the Second World War. Grawitz was born in Charlottenburg, in the western part of Berlin, Germany. Grawitz was also head of the DRK, the German Red Cross, between 1937 and 1945. Towards the end of World War II in Europe, Grawitz was a physician in AH's bunker. When he heard that other officials were leaving Berlin in order to escape the advancing Soviet Red Army, Grawitz petitioned AH to allow him to leave Berlin; his request was denied. As the Soviet Red Army advanced on Berlin, Grawitz killed himself and his family with grenades at their house in Babelsberg. (Born: 1899), died on this day in Potsdam-Babelsberg, Gau March of Brandenburg, Germany, aged 45.

#OTD World War II: Adolf Galland (Pictured) announced to the pilots of German Jagdverband 44 at München (Munich), Germany that the war was effectively lost, and he would only accept volunteers to continue fighting from now on. All of his men stepped forward as volunteers.

#OTD World War II: In Berlin, Germany, AH noted that, when Germany would have lost the war, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring (Pictured) would be the better person to negotiate peace terms. Göring, who was in Berchtesgaden in southern Germany, was made aware of this fact. After consulting Hans Lammers and other senior government officials, Göring carefully noted that, according to AH's decree of 29 June 1941, Göring would take power over Germany if AH could not respond by midnight. This message would be distorted by Martin Bormann as a sign of Göring's thirst for power. AH originally ordered Göring to surrender all of his positions, but Bormann would convince AH to issue an arrest order.

#OTD World War II: The German submarine U-710, a Type VIIC U-boat was sunk in the North Atlantic by a B-17 of No. 206 Squadron RAF, all 49 men aboard were killed including its commander Oberleutnant sur Zee Dietrich von Carlewitz (Pictured), he was 26 years old.

Time travel question: If you could give one item from our time to an ancient culture, what would it be?

We had no need for prisons or police.
 There were no homeless or hungry.
 We didn’t pay taxes. 
The women selected our chiefs and deposed the ones who displeased them. 
It was a beautiful egalitarian, matrilineal hunter/warrior society. 
So, 
why did they insist on calling us savages?

Still probably my most prized possession I own from World War II a German M35 Stahlhelm still has its original decals on it.
